PC maker Everex closes shop in North America

Everex shuts US operations

PC maker Everex has ceased business operations in North America, and is now in the process of liquidating its assets, according to a Tuesday report. The company's US website simply states "Everex US now closed" and doesn't provide an immediate reason for the closure. Japanese and Taiwanese domains appear to be fully operational, however. Company officials haven't commented on the shutdown to, which came with no advance warning to Laptop and others that noticed the change.

Kogan Agora netbook specs

A look at a pre-production version of Australia's Kogan Agora netbook was made possible on Thursday, revealing its specs as company founder Ruslan Kogan demonstrated a couple of the models at the offices of PC Authority. The 10-inch netbooks, first announced at the end of February, ran on both gOS Linux and Windows 7, with black and white examples shown, even though the final version will be sold only in black. The CPU will be Intel's 1.6GHz Atom N270, while the hard drive has a 160GB capacity, both netbook staples.

Everex, gOS introduce MySpace-friendly MyMiniPC

Everex in conjunction with gOS on Monday introduced a limited-edition MyMiniPC that runs on gOS Space 2.9, a Linux-based operating system made for MySpace users with brand new MySpace Apps. Basically a special edition of the Everex gPC mini, the computer is unique thanks to the OS and a new icon dock made up of the newest MySpace Apps and Web 2.0 entertainment media sites. The mission of MyMiniPC is to offer quicker, more efficient and user-friendly access to MySpace and its numerous offerings, all the while bringing Linux more mainstream.

Everex adds Mac mini-like PC to product lineup

Everex today unveiled the Everex mini, a Mac mini-styled CPU that features the company's own gOS 2.0 running on a dual-core processor. An Intel T2130 dual-core mobile processor powers the PC, while using a 120GB HD for storage and 512MB of RAM. For multimedia, Everex chose the Intel GMA950 graphics processor and Realtek ALC268 audio hardware, and the system includes a DVD+/-RW drive. The Everex mini will be available from Newegg.com for $500 on March 1st.

CloudBook good, not great

Everex' newly shipping CloudBook Mini features several niceties that make it unique from the Asus Eee PC, but other drawbacks prevent it from fully taking the micro PC's crown. Laptop Magazine writes that Mac OS-like gOS simplifies the device's functions, but ultimately slows the miniature laptop in terms of boot and application startup time. Initially, reviewer Mark Spoonauer said that the trackpad is small and cumbersome to use, but warmed to it in the end.

Everex prepping 'Eee PC-killer' ultra-mobile?

Everek Cloudbook Leak

Budget PC maker Everex hopes to do with ultra-mobile PCs what it did with the gPC desktop, says a leak from the company. To be called the Cloudbook, it will target the recently launched ASUS Eee PC with a similar 7-inch screen and the use of its in-house gOS Linux software in place of a costlier and more demanding copy of Windows; a 1.3-megapixel webcam is also expected to be part of the design.
