Sony Vaio Duo 11 tries hard to offer the best of both worlds

While criticisms about the radical redesign of Windows 8 have persisted since its introduction, it has been very much responsible for ushering in a wide range of really interesting PC hardware designs. One of these is the Sony Vaio Duo 11, which is an integrated hybrid design that marries a tablet experience with a notebook-like experience. However, as with just about every piece of new Windows 8 hardware that I can think of, the Vaio Duo 11 is better at handling one aspect of the Windows 8 interface than the other without quite nailing both properly.

WD uses SanDisk iSSD flash in 5mm-thick solid state hybrid drives

Uses iSSD to cache data for faster transfers

Western Digital has revealed it is working with SanDisk for its 5mm (0.2-inches) thick solid state hybrid drives (SSHD) that it revealed last month. The WD Black SSHD storage, aimed at notebook manufacturers aiming to create thinner devices, uses SanDisk's flash memory technology for the solid-state portion, which works alongside the WD-created hard disk.

LG reveals 2013 notebook, all-in-one PC range ahead of CES

Range includes pair of Windows 8 hybrid tablet-notebooks

LG has revealed its lineup of PCs it will put on display at CES next month, all of which have Windows 8 pre-installed and take advantage of LG's IPS display technology. The collection includes a pair of hybrid notebook-tablets, an ultrabook with an eight-second booting time, and an all-in-one desktop computer with a touchscreen display.

Asus delays US shipments for dual-screen Taichi ultrabook

Delays push shipments to December, possibly 2013

Asus is putting off US shipments of its dual-screen ultrabook-slate hybrid until December. The Taichi ultrabook, with its main selling point of a screen on both sides of the notebook's lid, was debuted at Computex in June and expected to be shipped in November, but delays have pushed the release date further back in the calendar, and possibly into 2013.

LG adds a hybrid slider and AIO its Windows 8 line-up

LG has joined the throng of manufacturers in rolling out brand new hardware for the imminent launch of Microsoft’s Windows 8 OS. Leading the introductions is a new 11.6-inch H160 hybrid slider PC. Like the Sony Vaio Duo 11 Slider, the device runs the full Windows 8 OS and weighs less than 3 pounds and converts from a notebook into a tablet.

Following Samsung's unveiling of the Sliding PC 7 tablet hybrid and 9 Series notebook, Electronista took a closer look at late-stage prototype models previewed this week at CES. The PC 7 represents Samsung's latest iPad rival, larger than the Galaxy Tab and geared for tasks that prove difficult without a desktop OS and full keyboard.

Sony showed off a tiny fuel cell at the Smart Fuel Cells 2008 exhibition that ends today, which combines a fuel cell, Li-polymer battery and control circuit for the first time. In testing conducted in Japan, Sony found a 1Seg video broadcast can play for 14 hours on 10mL of methanol. Use of a refined technology using the fuel cell could significantly boost the run times of today's consumer electronics, specifically laptop and cellphone batteries.

Gateway ships hybrid HD GM5664 desktop

Gateway hybrid HD desktop

Gateway today announced the shipment of several new desktop computers, the focus of which is the GM5664. Sold only at retail, the system is one of the few mainstream computers with a hybrid Blu-Ray/HD DVD drive, allowing playback of both HD media types, though it can only burn standard DVDs and CDs. The system is also equipped with a quad-core AMD Phenom 9600 processor, a 1TB hard drive, and a 256MB Radeon HD 2400 XT video card. It is currently selling for $1,150. As a cheaper option, the GT5662 switches to a DVD SuperMulti drive, a Phenom 9500 chip, and a smaller 500GB hard drive. Its price is $750.

Samsung to discontinue UP5000 hybrid player

Samsung UP5000 to die

Only months after its introduction, Samsung has already decided to discontinue the BD-UP5000, its hybrid Blu-Ray/HD DVD movie player. The unit was to have been one of the most powerful players Samsung had produced, with 1080p24, HDMI 1.3, and an Ethernet port for Internet content; users have reported substantial problems with it however, such the inability to run HD audio codecs, or properly view discs such as Sunshine or 3:10 to Yuma. Other problems have included troubles with with standard DVDs or the 4:3 aspect ratio.
