Retailer ups smartphone trade-in credit by $50 for new iPhone buyers

Beginning on Sunday, the US branch of Target will run another trade-in promotion for iPad 2 owners. People who bring in a used iPad 2 will be awarded a gift card worth at least $150. Although that credit can only be used at Target, the company is also offering an extra $30 card if a person buys a new iPad. $150 is generally higher than most specialized third-party trade-in services offer. Well-connected KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a memo to investors saying that while the new releases of the latest iPads will cause a spike in sales for the holidays, he sees a repeat of last year in terms of the smaller iPad mini taking share away from the larger iPad model. He also predicts that the Apple TV segment will grow slowly unless Apple can land more content and app deals. Kuo has had a good (but not perfect) track record in predicting Apple moves and results in recent quarters.

Launch weekend analytics indicate that iPad Air adoption is proving much faster than what was achieved with the fourth-generation iPad, according to Fiksu. The Air is already up to 0.74 percent of active iPads, whereas its predecessor managed just 0.15 percent in the same timeframe after its 2012 release. The fourth-gen model was generally considered an "interim" upgrade, though, simply adding a faster processor, a Lightning connector, and wider cellular compatibility. The Air is redesigned to be lighter, thinner, and narrower.

US Trade Representative Michael Froman, on behalf of the Obama administration, has decided to invoke a Presidential veto of the recent ITC ruling against Apple that would have resulting in a sales ban on GSM iPhone 4 devices (and other models no longer being actively sold). The ruling, in which the ITC reversed its own prior judgements on whether a Standards Essential Patent (SEP) that is under dispute should ever qualify for a sales injunction, was widely criticized even by Apple's competitors as a poor decision that overstepped the ITC's boundaries.

San Diego school system buys almost 26,000 iPads

San Diego's Unified School District has bought almost 26,000 iPads from Apple to distribute to 340 classrooms this fall, says 10 News. The purchase is coming through a voter-sanctioned funding program, Proposition S, which allocates money toward modern technology in local schools. The District's deal will cost it about $15 million, although it is saving some money by opting for the $399 iPad 2, on top of which it is getting an educational discount bringing the price of each tablet down to about $370.

The iPhone 4S was far and away the most-activated device during the March quarter by Good Technology enterprise customers, a new study by the firm says. Continuing some of the more in-depth examinations of the new iPad, a detailed screen comparison at DisplayMate has shown a major improvement in Apple's tablet display quality, albeit at a cost. While the 2048x1536 resolution is an obvious advantage, the display analysis team saw that the new screen saw big improvements in other areas, most of all color accuracy. While the iPad 2's display got just 61 percent of the standard color range, the new iPad's screen was near-flawless, with 99 percent accuracy on top of "perfect" contrast and gamma levels.

Apple inspected a Pegatron plant building iPad 2s mere hours before an explosion injured at least 59 people, according to workers interviewed by NPR. The number of injured was initially pegged at 61, but Apple currently claims 59. NPR says it met with 25 victims of the blast last week, such as He Wenwen, who was calibrating a machine used to polish iPad 2 backs when the explosion happened.
