Speck has unveiled a wide range of new and improved accessories for notebook computers and mobile phones. The company has updated its CandyShell cases for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, bringing seven new color combinations such as GuavaGoo Pink and Nightshade Purple, while eight new designs are available in the Fitted series of hard-shell cases. The SeeThru Satin cases, which were previously released for MacBooks, are also available for the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

USBfever and Koyono have both expanded their collections of iPhone and iPod accessories with the addition of several new protective cases. USBfever’s JOGJACKET is designed for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, as well as all three versions of the iPod touch. It is built from neoprene that wraps around the mobile device, while a transparent LCD protector enables full control over the touchscreen. The case also supports the Nike iPod Sports Kit and features a detachable armband which can be adjusted to fit up to 10 different sizes.

SwitchEasy and Marware have released new protective cases for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, as well as Apple’s latest iPod nano 5G. Cubes by SwitchEasy features a duotone silicone design somewhat resembling a checker-board style, and offers tears resistant material that protects against scratches, scrapes or bumps. It is made for the iPod nano 5G and comes with additional guards to help protect the devices click-wheel, screen, and 30-pin connector. Cubes is currently available in Black, Red, Blue, Pink, and Yellow colors.

Eye Glasses, Fairy Trails come to iPhone

Freeverse has released two new apps for the iPhone and iPod touch, Eye Glasses and Fairy Trails. Eye Glasses is designed to work with the iPhone 3G or 3GS, and turns the mobile device into a magnifying glass. The app uses the iPhone’s auto-focusing camera to display text or imagery in 2x, 4x, 6x, or 8x magnification. In order to use the feature simple activate the app while holding the mobile phone roughly five inches away from the area that needs to be magnified, the large print will then show up on the iPhone’s display screen for easier viewing.

Griffin Technology has announced it's expanding the line of protective cases for the iPhone 3G and 3GS with additional patterns and hard cases. The company's Elan Form Etch cases which are made from a combination of leather bonded to a polycarbonate inner shell will be available in four additional patterns including Solstice Taupe, Stars, Chess Taupe, Rewind, 405 and Vintage Brown. Each case also comes with the EasyDock design that enables users dock the iPhone without having to remove it from the case.

Apple is now broadcasting two new TV ads for the iPhone 3G S, promoting basic features of the device. The first highlights copy and paste support, through examples such as pasting a phone number into an SMS message, or copying a map out of Google Maps. The ad does not mention that copy/paste will work on any iPhone or iPod touch updated with the v3.0 firmware, including the original 2G iPhone from 2007.

Apple and AT&T are continuing to experience problems with new iPhone activations. Following initial activation delays of up to 48 hours, Apple began notifying customers early Sunday morning that customers may experience additional delays due to "system issues" and "high activation volumes." Although Apple did not disclose any numbers, AT&T's CEO said that the carrier had "hundreds of thousands" of pre-orders for the new, faster iPhone and analysts expect about 500,000 iPhone 3G S devices to be sold by the two companies in the first weekend.

There's nothing like a new piece of technology, especially one that's been as widely talked about as the new iPhone 3G S. MacNN has obtained a unit and already has some very early impressions. At first glance, the most noticeable change is the packaging: Apple has managed to shrink the box even further, barely larger than the iPhone itself and about three inches deep. As with previous models, there is very little paperwork, just a multi-touch guide, the required safety/legal notice and the customary Apple stickers.

Apple to open retail stores at 7 a.m. Friday

Apple today said it would open its retail stores at 7 a.m. local time on Friday, June 19 -- one hour earlier than its previously announced time of 8 a.m. The new time is the same as launch time of the new iPhone 3G S at AT&T retail stores, which also open at 7 a.m.; the carrier, however, will only distribute the devices to owners who pre-ordered the device through its direct fulfillment service and said that other customers will only be able to purchase the phones starting at 9 a.m., according to the same report by News.com.

AT&T lets iPhone 3G S buyers upgrade early

AT&T this afternoon offered an olive branch to existing iPhone 3G owners by offering early upgrade pricing for the iPhone 3G S. Those who would only qualify for upgrade pricing in July, August or September will now qualify for the lower prices on iPhones as of the iPhone 3G S launch this Friday. Previously, these customers would have had to pay $399 for an early upgrade to a 16GB model or $499 for a 32GB edition.

(Update with extra leaks) The version of the iPhone 3G S bound for Canadian provider Rogers and its sister carrier Fido may cost disproportionately more for existing customers than it will in the US, according to claims made by Fido representatives. While the three-year pricing is technically lower priced than the US counterpart, Fido reportedly says the newer device will cost a minimum of $799 CAD non-contract for a 16GB model and $899 for a 32GB version, or significantly higher than the equivalent $567 and $680 prices in the US.

Palm Pre may cost $160 to make

The Palm Pre may cost significantly more to make than first anticipated and has surprising similarity to the iPhone's supply chain as it's existed in the past, according to a post-launch cost breakdown by iSuppli. Originally thought to cost $138 in raw manufacturing and parts, the smartphone is now estimated to cost at least $140 and as much as $160. Much of the price is attached to the 3.1-inch Sony multi-touch LCD, which with its Cypress controller costs about $40.60.
