SD card capacities up to 32GB

Samsung has announced that it is ready to ship its full line of SD and microSD cards that will be sold under the company's own branding. The lineup includes seven new models in the 'High Speed' series and 'Plus Extreme Speed' series. The latter offerings include 8GB and 16GB Class 10 SD and microSD cards that are claimed to support 21MB/s write speed and 24MB/s read speed.

One memory card format to replace all others?

Samsung was said today to be developing the first Universal Flash Storage (UFS) memory cards based on a design developed by the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association. It expects to have the new format ready by the first half of 2011. The first generation of UFS is set to deliver 300Mbps data transfer speeds with future scalability. This compares very favorably with the recent announcement by Toshiba that its new Ultra High Speed I (UHS-I) will deliver maximum read rate of 95Mbps and write speeds of 80Mbps.

SD 4.0 standard outlined, due early 2011

Following an announcement from Toshiba at IFA yesterday that it has developed SDHC memory cards based on the new UHS-1 standard, the SD Association today outlined its plans for its forthcoming SD 4.0 standard. The breakthrough means that SD 4.0 can support real-time HD video playback, whether from a media player or a camcorder. The new SD 4.0 standard is based on a dual-row pin memory design that achieves bus interface speeds of up to 300MBps, or nearly three times faster than UHS-1's 105MBps.

CardRaider 2 for digicams

Ecamm Network today unveiled CardRaider 2.0, an update to its utility for recovering data from digital camera memory cards, adding the ability to restore movie data as well as photos. The application is designed to retrieve images and movies that were either accidentally deleted or lost, and features a one-click scan and recover mode. Once the data has been recovered, it can be directly sent to iPhoto. The update is available for free to existing users, while new copies of the software are available for $20, with a free demo located on Ecamm's website.
