Will test MCX executives' recent doublespeak claims on exclusivity

[Updated with MCX clarification] Rather than disable its NFC-compatible terminals and stop taking Apple Pay (or Google Wallet, or Softcard) mobile payments after a period of compatibility, grocery chain Meijer has said it has "no plans" to stop accepting NFC-compatible systems in its stores -- despite being a member of MCX's CurrentC program, which contractually bars competing systems. The CurrentC system, which does not formally begin until sometime next year, may try to impose fines as per its agreement with Meijers.

Following reader complaints of Rite-Aid stores no longer accepting Apple Pay or Google Wallet payments (following a brief period where both worked properly) and a "cone of silence" from PR representatives, leaked documents have revealed that the reversal by Rite-Aid on accepting NFC-based payments was deliberate, and that it may never accept Apple Pay, since it is planning to go with a rival mobile payments platform -- sometime next year.

Panera Bread memo confirms Apple Pay to launch on October 20

An internal memo at bakery cafe chain and Apple Pay launch partner Panera Bread has confirmed that Apple intends to launch the e-payment system on October 20, and that training is underway throughout the chain, which plans a massive promotional campaign to let customers know it can accept mobile payments using Apple Pay or other NFC-based e-wallet systems. A one-minute video and a FAQ sheet are among the training materials front-line Panera employees will need to get up-to-speed on the new system.

In interviews with the Wall Street Journal and ABC News' David Muir, Apple CEO Tim Cook reiterated many of the sentiments expressed during the Tuesday press even that introduced the two new iPhone 6 models, the Apple Watch wearable and the Apple Pay mobile payments system. He also, however, had a few words in response to questions, ranging from his thoughts on Steve Jobs in the three years since his passing, and how the iPhone 6 will trigger "the mother of all upgrades."

Ahead of an expected announcement of an Apple-led mobile payments solution, there have been new reports that prominent retailers such as Disney Stores, McDonald's and Apple's own retail stores have joined the ranks of businesses receiving new, upgraded NFC readers and iBeacon sensors as required. The system, if successful, could offer a future alternative to the planned move to a "chip and PIN" credit- and debit-card system already widely in use in Canada and Europe.

A new report is claiming that Apple is accelerating its plans for a grand "digital wallet" mobile payments system, which could even be ready to debut in the same time frame as the expected "iPhone 6." The company is said to be in talks with Visa to create a partnership agreement that would allow consumers to pay for goods and services using only their iPhone, leveraging the "secure enclave" portion of the A7 chip and Touch ID to create what would be expected to be a seamless mobile payment system.

Mobile payment app Venmo has released an update today, featuring a new method of sending a prompt money transfer to friends. Venmo facilitates mobile sending and receiving of money, ideal in situations such as splitting a dinner bill with friends, or for any other payment need. By using Bluetooth, Venmo can detect other Venmo users and provide a list of who is nearby. Though the app has not yet been updated on iTunes as of this writing, Venmo is free, and requires iOS 5.0 or later.

PayPal has introduced a new dongle for mobile transactions that allows for hands-free payments in stores. The PayPal Beacon, designed to be plugged in at retail environments, uses Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy to communicate with smartphones running the PayPal mobile app, with customers able to allow payments to continue by confirming with store employees, rather than pressing anything on their smartphone.

US Bank is commencing trials of its Go Mobile payments service for mobile phones. Available in Salt Lake City, Utah and Portland, Oregon, the bank will allow iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s owners to perform NFC payments, by encasing their phone with a specially created case with Near Field Communications chips embedded.
