T-Mobile brand Simple Mobile gets bought out by América Móvil's TracFone

Regional wireless provider América Móvil and its TracFone subsidiary and prepaid provider have purchased T-Mobile brand Simple Mobile on Thursday. While the financial details of the sale weren't revealed, TracFone is the largest mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) in the US, with about 20 million subscribers. Simple Mobile, which sells only SIM cards and service to those with their won smartphones, has about one million subscribers and 2.5 million device activations.

An upgrade roadmap has given out tentative upgrade timing for Android 4.0 as well as T-Mobile's next myTouch smartphones. Although details are still in flux, TmoNews heard that the custom, upsized version of the Samsung Galaxy S II for the network would get its update on or near May 14. A leaked memo to T-Mobile staff has confirmed that it and possibly other carriers are contradicting RIM's policies on phone tracking. Although BlackBerry designs leave RIM without Carrier IQ, TmoNews saw word that the Curve 9360, Torch 9810, and Bold 9900 all have the diagnostic app loaded inside. While not necessarily suggesting that RIM was misleading, it does show that the company has given away control to the carriers.

T-Mobile today finally took the wraps from its second myTouch phone and only the second HTC QWERTY phone since the G1. The myTouch 3G Slide adds its namesake keyboard and a larger 3.4-inch (but still 480x320) touchscreen, also swapping out the trackball for a trackpad and updating to Android 2.1. Its interface is almost as important: a custom-developed UI brings a Faves Gallery that keeps all the info and updates for 20 contacts, a Genius Button that provides Dragon Dictation-based voice commands not unlike Apple's Voice Control, and myModes that can change the entire OS theme and icon layout based on such specific conditions as the GPS location or the time of day.
