Report: Apple to loan iPads to retail employees at SF store

Program could expand to other stores

Apple has detailed plans to launch a pilot program to loan retail employees an iPad 2, which they could use freely for a week to help further familiarize them with iOS 5 and various apps, reports CNet. The program, which could be limited to just the company's flagship San Francisco store, could expand to other stores and potentially involve other products, such as the forthcoming iPhone revision or future laptops.

Virginia schools to test social studies on iPads

Educational publisher Pearson and the Commonwealth of Virgina have launched a first-of-its-kind full social studies curriculum for K-12 students in a 12-week pilot program that runs entirely on iPads as part of the state's "Beyond Textbooks" initiative. Beginning November 1st, seventh- and ninth-grade students at select schools in Arlington and Pulaski counties as well as the city of Newport News will use iPads to interact with four specially-designed apps tailored to the Virginia educational system's US and world history programs.

IBM offers Mac switch program

In an apparent attempt to lessen its reliance on Microsoft Windows, IBM has launched an internal pilot program designed to support employees who decide to switch to the Mac platform, according to Roughly Drafted. The pilot program ran from October 2007 through January 2008 and distributed 24 MacBook Pros to researchers at different sites within IBM Research. Of the sample group, 18 users said that the Mac offered a "better or best experience" compared to their existing Windows computer. 19 of the 22 users asked to keep their Macs after the pilot program had expired.

Garmin GPSMAP 495 mixes high end features, low price

Garmin GPSMAP 495

Garmin today unveiled the GPSMAP 495, a feature-rich trimmed down version of the GPSMAP 496, providing pilots with SafeTaxi airport diagrams, Smart Airspace, AOPA Airport directory data, and several other features. Garmin bills the device as an intermediary model to the 296 and 496, combining features from the 496 but maintaining a price close to the 296. Garmin is currently selling the GPSMAP 495 for $1600, and will be shipping in early April.
