Now features 64-bit Intel support for latest Mac models

Utility and recovery software maker Micromat has unveiled the latest version of its flagship product TechTool Pro, now at version 7.0. The company says that the program has been "completely rewritten" for 64-bit and next-generation Macintosh computers, and now offers improved volume optimization routines, SPD check and report, advanced memory-testing features and compatibility with recently-released Macs. The new version also features compatibility with the pre-release version of OS X Mavericks, the forthcoming next major update to OS X.

Mac recovery specialist SubRosaSoft has updated its entire line of data recovery software, including FileSalvage, CameraSalvage and PodSalvage to version 7.5, now featuring improved search and recovery functions that improve the chances of recovering lost files. The company has also updated the packages to fully support Lion and additional foreign languages. SubRosaSoft offers a risk-free trial version to show if files are recoverable before buying.

Stellar updates Phoenix Photo Recovery for images, AV files

Recovers from camera, phone cards, hard drives

Stellar Information Systems, known for its Stellar Phoenix drive-recovery software, has updated its version of the software specially aimed at recovering photos, audio and video from camera and mobile-phone memory cards as well as hard drives. Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery v4 tries to recover images and AV files in over 50 different formats from drives where the files have been accidentally deleted or formatted, or suffered from corruption, read/write errors or have been improperly ejected.

Recovery tool Disk Drill updated to version 1.2

Developer Cleverfiles has released what it calls the first "official" version of its data-recovery and file-protection software Disk Drill -- version 1.2 -- which recovers damaged and deleted data from hard drives, memory cards, iPods and other devices as well as protecting files with its Recovery Vault technology. The program is offered in free and pro editions for consumers, with two other editions aimed at business and enterprise customers.

Stellar Data Recovery of New Jersey launched two new Mac utility programs at Macworld 2011 to add to their hard drive recovery repertoire. Stellar Disk Defrag allows the creation of a bootable DVD so users can defragment and optimize drives running Mac OS X 10.4 or later, while Stellar Drive Clone creates a bootable backup or disk image of an entire hard drive or volume, making it easy to troubleshoot or restore the main drive and helping to prevent data loss.

Data Rescue 3.1 now 64-bit

Free update corrects bugs in v3

Prosoft has updated its hard drive recovery software, Data Rescue, to v3.1 which now runs natively as 64-bit on Snow Leopard systems, as well as tweaked the re-designed interface and made other changes to improve or fix issues introduced in v3, which debuted almost exactly a year ago.

DriveSavers offers iPhone recovery service

DriveSavers iPhone service

DriveSavers unveiled an iPhone recovery service at Macworld Expo in January, offering users the opportunity to save essential data from a malfunctioning iPhone that was not backed up. The service is able to recover pictures and critical data, once all other possible recovery alternatives have been exhausted. DriveSavers advertises a five to seven day turnaround for the recovery service, and costs anywhere from $500 to $1400, depending on the quality of the recovery.

Security software aids iMac recovery, free to schools

Waikato University iMac

Security tracking software designed at Waikato University aided in the recovery of a stolen iMac, which was taken from the home of a computer support group worker. Stuff.co.nz reports that the software took pictures of the thief when the iMac was set up again, using the built-in iSight, and was able to pinpoint the machine's location to within 100 metres. The Police were able to arrest the man who stole the computer, and he is now facing a court hearing.

CardRaider 2 restores data from camera memory cards

CardRaider 2 for digicams

Ecamm Network today unveiled CardRaider 2.0, an update to its utility for recovering data from digital camera memory cards, adding the ability to restore movie data as well as photos. The application is designed to retrieve images and movies that were either accidentally deleted or lost, and features a one-click scan and recover mode. Once the data has been recovered, it can be directly sent to iPhoto. The update is available for free to existing users, while new copies of the software are available for $20, with a free demo located on Ecamm's website.
