Apple logo taken off glass front, new plaza planned, other changes made
A new Apple Store planned for the Union Square area of San Francisco has been in the planning stages for some time, but a new revision to the company's plans that specifically addresses some prior concerns may finally win approval. The iPhone maker submitted new renderings and a new 3D architectural model redesigning a planned plaza with a new water feature, preserving but moving (slightly) an existing fountain, and breaking up an originally monolithic steel wall along Stockton Street.
Search giant aims to correct misinformation
Aiming to clear up confusion and alleged misinformation surrounding Android's graphics handling, Google engineer Dianne Hackborn has provided a deeper look into the mobile platform's hardware acceleration and rendering methods. "Full" hardware acceleration is said to have been added with Android 3.0 and higher, however the software has implemented some hardware accelerated drawing since before version 1.0.
Rendering performance 50 percent better in v3.5
AvisNocturna has released an update of its landscape rendering software, TerraRay 3.5. New capabilities in v3.5 include terrains at up to nine times the size of previous versions, and a grass-generation algorithm that is a complete rewrite of the code for both better realism and faster rendering. Overall rendering has been improved as well, with a 50 percent increase across the board.
Better render settings, new Erode Tool on tap
AvisNocturna has updated its landscape-rendering software, launching TerraRay 2.0 today on the Mac app Store. The program is geared toward creating natural landscapes with elements like vegetation, rocks, clouds and water.
Faster computation and rendering
E-on has released an update to its 3D Digital Nature software, Vue. Version 8.4 brings a variety of improvements and new features, including faster computation and rendering of displaced materials on standard terrains. The utility also integrates a new multi-materials function, allowing users to change all materials of an object in a single operation. The multi-materials can then be saved for future use, or copied between different objects in a scene.
New export formats added
Mirye has released an update to 3D modeling and animation suite, Shade. Version 10 brings a variety of new features, with an overall focus on integration with other software. Users can now take advantage of multi-pass rendering for creating layered TIFF files that allow post-processing of individual effects. The update also offers a new 3D manipulator, custom work panes, and customizable viewports.
System utilizes CPU and GPU resources
Bunkspeed has announced that its upcoming SHOT software will integrate Iray rendering technology developed by Mental Images. The new system will allow the software to process renders using a combination of CPU and GPU resources, including NVIDIA's CUDA-equipped graphics cards. Offloading the rendering tasks to various components is said to significantly reduce processing times.
Free trials of 3D modeling and animation tools
E-on has announced several new software options in the Vue 8 family of 3D rendering and animation tools. The Vue 8 Personal Learning Edition (PLE) is essentially a fully functional version of the company's xStream/Infinite utilities. Users can create and complete projects, save the work, and render stills or animations without any size or length limits.
Software follows Vue 8 releases eary in the week
Following the release of Vue 8 Infinite and xStream this week, e-on is now shipping the rest of its Vue 8 animation utilities including Frontier, Pioneer, Esprit, Studio, and Complete. Frontier provides tools for creating scenic nature and Poser character rendering. The software supports any static Poser model and allows users to render the models using the native shading trees of Poser. A free version of SkinVue is included for enhancing skin realism.
SolidThinking 8.0 adds morphogenesis integration
SolidThinking has launched global updates to its photorealistic rendering and animation software packages, SolidThinking 8.0 and SolidThinking Inspired 8.0. The design programs offer tools for creating manufacturable models, and allow users to render photorealistic 3D product designs. The latest version of SolidThinking 8.0 delivers a variety of productivity and rendering enhancements, along with an improved materials library with increased browsing speed and lighting previews. Users also have the ability to create multiple materials libraries
modo 401 ships
Luxology has launched modo 401 , the next generation of its 3D content creation software. The new update focuses on enhancing rendering and animation. Rendering enhancements include caustics, dispersion, blurry refraction, volumetric lighting and deep shadows. modo 401 adds instance replicators which allow dense amounts of surface detail like rivets, trees and barnacles to be rendered with trillion polygon detail. There is also light linking, stereoscopic rendering and support for multiple environments that provide precise control over scene lighting. Version 401 can render on up to 32 cores across a network of 50 workstations.
VRAYforC4D v1.1 shipping
LAUBlab has released version 1.1 of VRAYforC4D, a major update to the Vray renderer for 3D animation suite Maxon Cinima4D. The update adds over 75 features, enhancements and fixes. It also upgrades the render core to version 1.6 (from Chaosgroup), and has optimizations most areas of the engine. The Vray engine offers accurate light and surface quality rendering, and supports user-defined values, photometric light intensities and IES light data. It also offers control to alter reality for special lighting effects.
Swift 3D speeds Intel, PPC
Electric Rain has released a Universal Binary of Swift 3D 5.0 and also added performance gains to the 3D-rendering application. Swift 3D imports and renders Flash content and exports Flash 3D content via Papervision3D export. Version 5.0 adds low-level changes that triple rendering speeds for vector and raster renders on Intel chips. The update also speeds rendering and increases compatibility for Power PC chips. Swift 3D 5.0 adds new rendering textures, views and animations, while upgrading the user interface. It requires Mac OS X 10.2 an above, with minimum requirements of a 400MHz processor and 128MB RAM. Swift 3D 5.0 is available now for $250 with a 15-percent discount available through the month of August with the promotional code SUMMER2008.
LightWorks talks SIGGRAPH
LightWork Design has announced LightWorks 7.9 will debut at next month's SIGGRAPH computer graphics exhibition.
