Judge 'erred' in challenging constitutionality
A federal appeals court has reversed a federal judge's slashing of damages against college student Joel Tenenbaum, who was found guilty of sharing 30 music tracks on Kazaa -- and reinstated the jury's award of $675,000 in damages, or $22,500 per song, reports Wired reports. The previous judge, Nancy Gertner of Boston, had reduced the jury's verdict to 10 percent, or $67,500 ($2,250 per song). The appeals court ruled that Gertner should have used a different approach.

Adds short video 'context' to shared pics
Instant social-sharing of photos snapped (primarily) on the iPhone or iPod Touch through apps like Instagram has caught on with both artists and amateurs as a way to quickly pass on discoveries and documentation of their lives. A new service and app, GLMPS (pronounced "glimpse," free) offers a twist on the idea by pre-recording the five seconds before a photo is taken, making the photo the last "frame" of a short video -- giving more context to the picture.

New organization options, global search
Cloud Engines on Friday introduced the second-generation Pogoplug, along with a variety of new features for storing and sharing multimedia. The hardware features the same plug-and-play capability of the original, but adds several USB ports to allow connection of up to four external hard drives without using a dedicated USB hub.

ShareTool adds features
Yazsoft has announced ShareTool 1.2.2, an upgrade to its Bonjour-based remote access application. ShareTool allows users to access Macs from remote locations, with support for all Bonjour-based services, such as iTunes music sharing, screen sharing and more. New in v1.2.2 is a major reworking of the user-interface, with emphasis on simplicity of use, updated ShareTool protocols and a built-in Help menu. Also new is remote printing ability and Sparkle support. Version 1.2.2 also offers remote login detection. The new version is available now for $20 (two-user license is $30, a five-user license is $75), and requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher.

TeamViewer now free
German Developer TeamViewer GmbH is making the full version its flagship desktop sharing software free to non-commercial users. TeamViewer is a cross-platform appication that allows 'information sharing between two computers located anywhere in the world." The company says TeamViewer is easy to use, and supports screen and file sharing between firewalls without compromising security.

Unknown Vector today launched the uvLayer beta, a free, multi-service video sharing community that allows users to communicate with friends across several social networks. uvLayer relies on Adobe AIR to provide a full-screen video organization and sharing area. Users can sort videos however they choose, by stacking, dragging, and throwing video thumbnails across the virtual tabletop. uvLayer requires Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or later, and the Adobe AIR browser plugin.
