LinkedIn to remove ability to run polls in its Groups feature

Social networking platform service LinkedIn has announced that it will be discontinuing the ability to conduct polls in its Groups feature. According to TheNextWeb, polls were introduced to Groups in late 2011, but the feature is now considered to be obsolete by LinkedIn as to create space for more efficient service elements. Polling will be retired as of May 15; until then, users can post questions and receive polling results.

Twitter's Conversations layout redesigned

Twitter released Version 5.1 of its iOS app today. The app lets users of the prominent social networking site connect to their Twitter account to get real-time stories, pictures, videos, and conversations on one's own 'timeline.' The latest update includes a redesigned Conversations segment, including a blue line indicating a conversation between people you follow, and the first Tweet in a thread now appears above the most recent reply. The new release also includes various other improvements, including new notification settings and bug fixes. Twitter 5.1 can be downloaded for free from iTunes for devices running iOS5 or later.

Google today unleashed a slew of new features for its social networking project, Google+, Beginning today, Google is rolling out new versions of both its Android and iOS Google+ apps, bringing Google+ Communities to the apps, as well as the ability to edit profiles and indicate how many guests one will bring to an event. Users can also add animated images to events in posts and, if they have a device running Android 4.2 or above, they can create Photo Sphere images, while users running Android 3.0 or above can view and explore Photo Sphere images.

Microsoft's work-in-progress Socl has opened its doors to all. The nascent social network project was originally available to invited testers, and was primarily used amongst Microsoft employees along with students in a few select universities. Officials have described the new product as a combination of social networking and image search (a la Pinterest), to try to get groups "considering how to use collaboration technologies in new ways."

While competitors are touting deeper integration of Facebook into their products, Samsung is reportedly looking to unseat the social networking giant. Unnamed officials within the company have revealed to The Korea Times that Samsung will introduce a social network embedded in its products sometime early next year. The company is said to have been emboldened by early successes with some of its social offerings, and believes it can build a network to eventually compete with Facebook.

Bump, a free app for quickly sharing information between mobile devices, has been completely redesigned with a focus on sharing contact information in social settings and sharing photos with friends and family. Unlike most major updates, Bump 3.0 actually removes more features than it adds, however, the developers feel this has resulted in a streamlined experience that still offers the most requested functions. Bump's new interface uses a swipeable layer that allows users to move between different functions while remaining ready to bump at any time. The existing mutual friends feature has also been expanded and will now instantly show any mutual friends that two new contacts have. At the time of writing the update has not shown in the App Store, but is expected to become available later today.

Social app Path uploads users' address books, to get fix

The social networking app Path, which provides its own community along with the ability to share statuses and pictures to other popular public networks like Twitter and Facebook, has been discovered to be uploading users' entire address books to its own servers on first use. The undisclosed (and unauthorized) uploading was discovered by developer Arun Thampi and detailed in a blog post. The co-founder of Path responded by saying users would soon have an opt-in on the "feature," but did not explain why opt-in wasn't there from the beginning.

A survey commissioned by a security app developer that polled parents in the U.K. has revealed surprising attitudes about children and access to technology and the internet. The study focused on primary-school children (ages 5-10) and found that one in 10 kids under the age of 10 years old already owns their own iPhone. One in 20 have their own iPad, and one in 10 children in the survey had a social networking account -- despite the age limit of MySpace and Facebook being 13.
