Motorola blocked from having appeal dismissed outright
In the ever-more-complicated legal wrangles between Apple and Google (through its subsidiary Motorola), Apple has won the right to proceed with an attempt to appeal a case between Apple and Motorola in which the iPhone maker was suing Motorola for failing to adhere to FRAND guidelines, while Motorola was suing Apple for alleged infringement of standards-essential patents (SEPs) it holds. Rather than rule on the merits of each company's argument, US District Court Judge Barbara Crabb surprisingly dismissed both complaints outright.

Direct competitor to Apple Airplay
A new industry standard for video streaming is set to directly compete with Apple's AirPlay for dominance of the TV. Industry standards group the Wi-Fi Alliance has started a certification program for the Miracast standard, which will allow compatible devices to display video, images and applications instantly, regardless of brand.

IEEE revises 802.11 Wi-Fi stanards
The IEEE has published expanded standards for increased speeds and simpler communications in Wi-Fi. The revision, called IEEE 802.11-2012, increases the scope of the existing networking standards to include more supported devices and improve cellular network hand-offs. This is the fourth revision of the standard since the original publication in 1997.
