Application to lower the broadcast barrier for news
BitTorrent is set to release the first peer-to-peer broadcast application for mobile devices based on its BitTorrent Live protocol. Positioned as a new way bring news to the people, the idea will be to distribute news through P2P crowdsourcing as it happens, instead of relying on broadcast news.
Court fees plus undetermined copyright damages due from host
Anti-piracy outfit BREIN has won a prescedent-setting case against web host XS Networks, the previous provider for torrent site SumoTorrent. XS Networks was found to be culpable in facilitation of copyright infringement, and has been acting unlawfully against the interests if the copyright holders represented by BREIN. The landmark ruling at the Court of the Hague has implications worldwide for the liability of hosting companies for the conduct of and content hosted by paid clients.
The Tunnel to debut on torrent and DVD on May 19
Come May 19, a new horror movie called The Tunnel will make the most original and uncommon of premieres: on BitTorrent. According to TorrentFreak, the free movie from Paramount Pictures will also come out at the same time on DVD, though the physical format will carry a sticker price with it. The movie is set in the tunnels under Sydney, Australia, and follows a TV news crew.
