Maps team now hiring a 'Community Client Software Engineer' to go beyond reporting problems

Apple is now looking for a "Community Client Software Engineer" and data analyst to join its Maps team, apparently to expand its use of crowdsourced data for Maps in iOS and OS X to both make improvements in location accuracy as well as possibly improve reporting on traffic conditions. While the Maps app already has options for users to report problems they may find, the job posting suggests that Apple may ask for users to voluntarily send in more information, either automatically or manually, to improve Maps.

Program exchanges traffic data between governments, crowdsourced traffic platform

Waze is expanding its data reach today, launching the Connective Citizens program to bring the crowdsourced navigation platform together with 10 governments across the globe. The initiative is expected to improve the amount of information available in Waze, while granting municipalities and other government bodies information on road incidents and traffic conditions.

Inrix updates Traffic for mobile, drops price, adds personalization

Premium app offers cheapest gas, unlimited saved places at lower price

Inrix, a provider of traffic and driver data and services, has updated its free Inrix Traffic app to version 5.0 to add more free services, and has also reduced the price of the in-app "premium" version purchase from $25 to $10 permanently. The new version features a personalized traffic congestion news page which features the fastest routes given current traffic conditions, and has made a number of formerly premium features free.

Chitika: new iPads already 10 percent of total iPad mix

May indicate steady post-launch sales

A new study by analytics analysis firm Chitika suggests that the presence of third-generation iPads in internet traffic has doubled since the initial four-day launch window, now showing that the 2012 model is making up around 10 percent of all iPads surfing the net after only three weeks availability. While online tracking metrics are not a direct method for measuring sales, the average rate of online growth can be inferred to be an indicator of popularity.

Both Aha Mobile and ALK Technologies have released new updates to their GPS-enabled apps for the iPhone. The Aha traffic and destination-finder app allows users to see the current traffic flow and travel time of roads, while delivering tools for locating nearby rest stops or coffee shops. With the latest 1.2 update users have the ability to speak into their iPhone and broadcast voice tweets to nearby drivers, as well as post the Aha Shouts automatically to either Twitter or FaceBook.
