High-end card memory increase coming, bonus game in top of 'Never Settle' offer

Those mulling over a purchase of an AMD video card might want to consider picking up one of the high-end models either soon or in the near future, as the company made some announcements that could sweeten the deal. AMD confirmed today that 8GB versions of Radeon 290X video cards are on the way, along with an offer that gives buyers of select cards a free copy of Civilization: Beyond Earth.

KONA 6.5 update ships

AJA Video System has released KONA 6.5, updating the software for its KONA line of video capture and playback cards, including the KONA LSe, LHe, LHi and KONA 3. The new version adds compatibility with the recently released Final Cut Studio and Final Cut Pro 7. ProRes 422 LT, Proxy and ProRes 4444 are now compatible with the software as well. Other features added in version 6.5 include closed caption support for FCP 7, MacCaption, VTR Xchange and AJA TV, VANC data capture and playback support for ProRes formats and expanded KONA LHi support.

AMD announces pro-level DisplayPort video

AMD/ATI FireGL V7700

AMD has introduced its first professional-level videocard with a DisplayPort connection, the FireGL V7700. Intended for tasks like art and engineering design, the 7700 is a PCIe 2.0 card with 512MB of RAM, and 320 unified shaders. The DisplayPort connection is said to improve image quality, offering 10-bit output with over a billion colors; alternately, users can rely on the card's dual-link DVI-I output, which supports 30-inch screens, and as many as four displays when paired with other cards. Also present is a standard VGA port.

AMD readying another Radeon HD 3800 series?

AMD Radeon HD 3830

AMD is developing a third group of video cards based on its Radeon HD 3800 series, claim sources for the Chinese site HKEPC. The debut card will be the 3830, based on the company's RV670 architecture, and modeled after the company's existing 3850 and 3870 cards. Like the 3850, the 3830 is said to have 320 unified shader processors, and 256MB of onboard RAM; it uses a 128-bit bus instead of the standard 256-bit one however, significantly impacting performance and placing the card on the lowest rung of AMD's high-end offerings.

Mac Pro ATI freezing issue

Users in Apple's forums are expressing discontent with their Mac Pros, new and old, saying that the machines are suffering from graphics freezes that seem to revolve around ATI-based video cards. Reminiscent of freezes that happened on the aluminum iMacs, the freezes sometimes display graphical distortions, such as lines or swimming dots. Some users theorize that the Radeon X1900 and the 2600 XT tend to overheat easily, especially if the card is dusty.

Following its introduction of the mainstream-oriented GeForce 9600 GT, NVIDIA has also announced a new video card for professionals, the Quadro FX 3600M. Slotting into notebooks, the card is equipped with 512MB of G-DDR3 memory, and uses a 256-bit interface that provides up to 51.2GBps of bandwidth. Its primary purpose is for tasks such as CAD, modeling and rendering, and as well as various kinds of simulation.

ASUS leaks new AMD, Nvidia video cards

AMD, Nvidia leaks at ASUS

Through the now-ended CES expo, ASUS has leaked the existence of two more upcoming video cards. In the first quarter of the year, the company's M50Sa and F8Sp notebooks will carry AMD's Mobility Radeon 3650, a PCIe 2.0 card with support for Microsoft's DirectX 10.1 standard. While AMD has officially announced the companion 3600, the 3650 has only been mentioned in third-party accounts, making ASUS' news the first word from a proper vendor.
