New interface, separate modes aim to please all levels of users
Adobe late Monday announced the new Photoshop Elements 11 and Premiere Elements 11, the company's consumer-level photo-editing and video-editing programs. The new versions have both been given makeovers in the user interface once again, with modes separated by skill levels (three in PS Elements, two in Premiere Elements) and new effects. The workflow has been re-thought to make the editing quicker and easier to use for both Mac and Windows users, and both include more sharing options than before, including Vimeo.

iMovie adopts new PC-friendly video format
Apple on Tuesday released iMovie 8.0.5 [36MB], an update to its free movie editing software bundled with all new Macs. According to Apple, the update improves compatibility with a number of devices and fixes other minor issues, including improved compatibility with camcorders using the iFrame video format and with importing video captured on the iPod nano as well as fixed problems with resizing the iMovie window during playback. The update, available both online and via the Software Update, is recommended for all users of iMovie '09.

Test Gear 2.0 for CS3
Synthetic Aperture is now shipping Test Gear 2.0, a new version of its video and audio monitoring software designed for Adobe After Effects CS3. Test Gear features a waveform monitor, vectorscope, and other diagnostic displays -- all of which are fully integrated into After Effects CS3's user interface. Version 2.0 also adds Universal Binary support for Intel-based Macs as well as enhances all of the test instruments by adding full support for 32-bit floating-point projects. Synthetic said that video footage imported into After Effects now properly displays values above 100 IRE and below 0 IRE on the waveform monitor, slice display, and histogram and a new Gamut Display has been added that clearly shows the "legality" of the levels in the image. Test Gear 2.0 requires Adobe After Effects CS3 (and is not compatible with earlier versions of After Effects). Test Gear 2.0 is currently shipping for $125 per license ($95 if downloaded via the company's web site). Upgrades from previous versions of Test Gear are $50 (download only).
