Report: GCHQ collected photographs of Yahoo webcam chat users

Automated facial recognition performed on webcam stills by UK security agency

The British security intelligence agency GCHQ secured millions of photographs from webcams used with Yahoo's chat services, a report alleges. The agency is claimed to have captured and stored images from more than 1.8 million users in one six month period in 2008 alone, with the surveillance activities said to have continued from 2008 to 2010, though it is possible the program continued for years afterward.

The HD Webcam C615 fold-and-go webcam is designed to give users the option to move the device from room to room or to take it on the road. It shoots video for web chats in 720p and is compatible with Skype, FaceTime, Logitech Vid HD, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. For regular video capture, it can shoot in full 1080p. It also incorporates built-in autofocus and can swivel a full 360-degrees.

Logitech TV Cam uses Carl Zeiss optics for 720p

Logitech has unveiled its TV Cam for Skype, which delivers 720p video chat to user’s living rooms. The device features Carl Zeiss optics and is compatible with Skype-enabled HD TVs. It has sensitive, dual mics with echo cancellation that allows users to sit some distance away from their TV on the couch, for example, but deliver high quality sound and images to family and friends. To further help cater for lounge room use, the device also has a wide-viewing angle of 78-degrees.

Logitech announced that its flagship HD Pro Webcam C910 is now fully Mac-compatible. The HD Pro Webcam 910 is plug-and-play ready for Photo Booth, iChat and FaceTime. A free download provides integration with iPhoto and IMovie and enable video calling at HD 720p resolution. The HD Pro Webcam can be used with common video calling clients such as Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, and Gmail Voice and Video Chat.

Samsung announces HD CMOS video sensor for computers

Samsung HD CMOS sensor

Electronics company Samsung has announced the latest addition to its line of CMOS image sensors, the S5K4AW, a 1/4-inch 1.2-Megapixel HD system-on-chip (SoC) unit. The embedded component is designed for notebook or desktop computers, with a focus on video capture for conferencing, web-based video sharing, or biometrics and security functions. The company claims that the sensor supports 720P HD video at 30 frames per second, and captures VGA-resolution streams at 60 frames per second.

Apple granted iSight, cooling, Gaussian blur patents

iSight, cooling patents

Apple has today been granted three patents by the US Patent and Trademark Office, relating to several different technologies. The first of these is entitled "Video Conferencing Apparatus and Method," and covers a particular implementation of webcams. The patent makes specific reference to the defunct external iSight cameras, but also applies to the internal ones incorporated into modern Macs, and could theoretically be used to create an iPhone video camera.

Unfortunately, the Mac mini and Mac Pro lack a built-in iSight camera, so if you want to use video conferencing with these Mac models, you’ll need to buy a separate webcam such as Logitech’s QuickCam Vision Pro.
